How do I check for a valid IP address?

This Only Works on WIN 2000 and WIN XP machines

1. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt

2. When the command prompt opens type "ipconfig /all" (without quotation marks)

3. Your IP address should be a 10.__ number if it is correct.


How do I check my email using Internet Explorer?

Go to http://mail1.wilcoxschools.org/webmail

Notice that there is no www. Enter your username and password and login. You can send and receive emails in this way. You can also check your email from home using this method.


How do I map a drive?

You need to do this if you are getting a disk error when trying to access STI.

Directions are for Windows XP

1. Right click on My Network Places or any application

2. Choose Map Network Drive

3. There are now two lines that have to be filled out : Drive and Path

In the Drive Box, use the down arrow and choose F. Then in the Path box either choose or type \\schoolinitialsbdc\d. For example \\hobbsbdc\d.

4. Make sure the box that says “reconnect at login” is checked

5. Click OK.


How do I request computer repair?

Download a computer repair request from the forms link and submit it to your tech liaison.

Once your request is submitted to the technology liaison, they will attempt to remedy the problem. If they cannot, the request will be forwarded to the Office of Technology and repairs will be scheduled. Emergencies, such as network outages and loss of connectivity will be handled as priorities. All other requests will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.


What do I do if I can't get on the Internet?

First, check the back of the computer where the Cat-5 cable (the blue cord) goes in and see if the light beside it is green.

If the light is green, the problem is with the computer. If the light is not green, the problem is with the connection. Fill out a repair request and indicate whether the problem is the machine or the connection. 


What to do if you can't access STI

First, check to be sure your logged onto the network.

If you did not type in your user name and password, you will not be able to access any resources on the network. If you have logged on, see how to map a drive.
